All-electric powertrains and low-priced, high-margin vehicle lines don’t exactly go hand in hand, but Renault-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn says not to count out that possibility when it comes to Renault’s Dacia division in Romania. With expanding EV sales bringing component costs down and pushing public entities to install more recharging stations, Ghosn says there is “nothing that forbids an electric Dacia car in the future,” reports UK’s Auto Express.

Renault has done well with the Dacia unit that was acquired in 1999. Dacia now accounts for about 10 percent of the European car market, and former Renault chief operating officer Carlos Tavares recently referred to the division as “a cash cow.” Dacia sells five models across 36 countries, though all are of the conventional gas-powered variety. We look forward to a change in that situation.

Earlier this month, Dacia showed off the newest version of its Duster budget SUV, giving the model a new 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder engine, updating its interior and pricing it at less than $14,000. We get the feeling that EV will cost a little more than that.
